At last, the bird appeared. A knight in gleaming armor followed after it. The knight sang a soft tune under his breath. His helmet nestled under one arm leaving his face exposed.

“Eamon,” I whispered.

My breath left me. I stood frozen, taking in the sight of him.

His blue eyes still focused on the bird, waiting, as though expecting it to lead him farther. His blond hair swept to one side. A lock of it curled down his forehead touching the corner of his eye.

Suddenly, didn’t want him to see me. The humiliation, injustice, and betrayal I had felt that day when Eamon left and returned like a torrent of boiling water.

I shrank against the tree, grasping at the bark for support. Tears threatened to fall, but I bit my lip, holding them back.

Eamon must have guessed that the paper bird had reached its destination. He dropped his eyes and scanned the area.

I knew he wouldn’t be able to see me. I could slip past him and return to the city.

Before I moved, Eamon drew near enough for me to understand the song he sang as he walked.
